New York, Susquehanna & Western Railroad in New Jersey, New Jersey, Imag... Originally incorporated in 1881, the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railroad has had a long history in New Jersey. The railroad expanded by the early 1890s into the thriving Pennsylvania coalfields and eventually grew to over 200 miles of trackage in the northern portion of New Jersey. Always viewed as an underdog in a marketplace surrounded by much larger railroads, the New York, Susquehanna & Western emerged from 40 years of Erie Railroad control; survived several bankruptcies, reorganizations, abandonments, and retrenchments through innovative passenger and freight service offerings; and transformed into today's regional rail carrier with a size far greater than ever imagined.

Metropolitan New York's Third Avenue Railway System, New York, Images of Rail, P Metropolitan New York's Third Avenue Railway System features never-before-published photographs documenting the final years of this streetcar system, from 1940 to 1957. Chartered as the Third Avenue Railroad Company in 1853, the system provided streetcar service on Third Avenue from Ann Street to 61st Street. The line eventually extended north to Harlem and across 125th Street and, in its heyday, north of Manhattan into the Bronx and northern Westchester County. Individual lines, such as the Yonkers Railroad, the Westchester Electric Railroad, the Queensborough Bridge Railway Company, and the Union Railway, are featured in this book. Metropolitan New York's Third Avenue Railway System recalls the bygone street scenes of Manhattan, as well as some of the carbarns and work cars and the car-scrapping yard employed by the system.

Detroit's Sojourner Truth Housing Riot of 1942, Michigan, American Heritage, Pap During World War II, no American city suffered a worse housing shortage than Detroit, and no one suffered that shortage more than the city's African American citizens. In 1941, the federal government began constructing the Sojourner Truth Housing Project in northeast Detroit to house 200 black war production workers and their families. Almost immediately, whites in the neighborhood vehemently protested. On February 28, 1942, a confrontation between black tenants and white protesters erupted in a riot that sent at least 40 to the hospital and more than 220 to jail. This confrontation was the precursor to the bloodiest race riot of the war just sixteen months later. Gerald Van Dusen, author of 2020 Michigan Notable Books nominee Detroit's Birwood Wall, unfolds the background and events of this overlooked moment in Motor City history.
