In January 1943 Smtih convened 500 "leaders" (supporters) in Detroit to establish the party, which he maintained was a "safety-first move.in case old parties go internationalist in 1944.". Smith campaigned for President in 1944 and continued to promote the party until 1946 when it was replaced by the Christian Nationalist Party (superseded by the Christian Nationalist Crusade the following year).
